Choosing drenches

In the October WormBoss feature a statement regarding the value of combination treatments was worded so as to imply an incorrect statement, which is addressed in this article. In discussing the value of combination treatments it was stated that:

“There are a number of ways to slow development of drench resistance by using combination drench treatments. Combination treatments (also called multi-active treatments) expose worms to more than one active ingredient at the same time and the chance of a worm being resistant to both actives is much lower than for any single active ingredient”.

This should have read:

“There are a number of ways to slow development of drench resistance by using combination drench treatments. Combination treatments (also called multi-active treatments) expose worms to more than one active ingredient at the same time and the chance of a worm being resistant to all active ingredients in the combination is much lower than for each individual active on its own”.

WormBoss recommends 4 key principles to consider when choosing a drench. The principles aim to deliver effective treatments while managing development of drench resistance. These principles accompany other drenching practices such as quarantine drenching to keep drench-resistant worms out of your property (see September WormBoss News Feature Article), good drench practice of calibrating drench guns to ensure the correct dose is delivered, providing a dose rate based on the heaviest animals in the mob and following label instructions, meat withholding periods and export slaughter intervals.
