State Outlooks for October 2018
Along with summer rain come the flies and worms. Many regions are still very dry or drying out in the approach to summer.
Worm numbers are variable across the state and very dependent on the individual farm management system and the weather events. Coccidia burdens are being seen in confinement–fed and feedlotted lambs.
Egg counts have been quite variable highlighting the need to closely monitor weaners and light-conditioned ewe mobs into November.
Now that there have been storms, producers should undertake worm egg counts in mid–November.
If a drench is needed then consider leaving some of the best-conditioned adult sheep undrenched.
Although some mobs of ewes and lambs are a bit daggy, overall they look good.
During confinement feeding, sheep should be monitored for condition score, fly strike and worm burden to ensure that the diet is producing the desired results.
