Queensland worms, flies and lice update - August 2015

Brisbane: Maxine Murphy, Veterinary Parasitologist (maxine@paraboss.com.au)

Western Queensland is still suffering dry conditions.  In the southern regions of the state conditions are also dry and fire warnings are being issued by government agencies.  Some rains and thunderstorms have been predicted for some parts of the Darling Downs and Maranoa in the next week. Follow your regional WormBoss Program (see above).

In the run-up to lambing, nutrition to ensure pregnant ewes maintain a good body condition becomes increasingly important. Traditionally, August has been a time to check for worms that have survived the long winter and decide on a lambing drench.  Any rains combined with a return to summer temperatures could initiate the barber’s pole cycle especially if follow-up rains occur in the next four weeks.  Any larvae picked up in the next few weeks are the precursors of the summer infestations.
